The shelter was opened to the public on May 19, 1982. The animals come from ports and airports, among others. There they are confiscated if they are illegally smuggled into the Netherlands. Furthermore, the animals come from private individuals who have discarded the animals because they no longer want or can no longer care for them. The animals are initially quarantined.
An attempt is made to return the animals to the country/area they come from. If that doesn't work, then they are offered to institutions such as zoos and put on display. Several animals will also remain in Vlissingen. This permanent live animal exhibit attracts many thousands of visitors each year. The reptile zoo is regularly in the news with the births of special animals in captivity. The largest animal is a Reticulated Python of over six meters. There are also other snakes, crocodiles, lizards, turtles, amphibians, and all kinds of invertebrates to see.

Vlissingen also offers a lot of walking and cycling pleasure. Beautiful routes have been laid through dune areas and along the entire coast, you can walk on the beach and get a breath of fresh air.
